Mantra for Carers

I wrote this mantra for carers and thought – good for today! Good for tomorrow …

A Mantra for Carers:

  • Anything is possible if you at least try
  • Focus on enjoying the journey, the process
  • Positive company matters most
  • Slow and steady will finish
  • Do it for fun
  • Do what you can – except give up

Why have a mantra for carers?

If a mantra picks me up today – it could pick me and you up tomorrow. I decided to post my mantra because blogging is a shared journal for Emily, me and others, to pop in and out of, to review our journey and progress, to maintain our positive psyche.

I think the word journey is overused but our language doesn’t offer many appropriate alternatives …the dictionary gives me options; jaunt, trip and travel. I think trip sounds like I’m on drugs and travel sounds like I’m on holiday. I’m not even considering the use of jaunt so I’m settled on the word journey.

I should have had my mantra etched onto our suitcases when we journeyed through Europe…

  • Anything is possible if you at least try – Drinking a Bellini in Harry’s Bar, Venice!

  • Focus on enjoying the journey, the process. The stunning scenery driving from Vienna.

  • Slow and steady will finish. Rome wasn’t built in a day!

  • Do it for fun …and the food!

  • Do what you can – except give up. The whole world is out there to explore…

Using my mantra to move forward

We are all moving, growing, learning and developing into stronger, better forms of ourselves. I envisage in 5 years being in a different place, on a different path because Emily should be nearing her post-graduate course completion. I hope she’s driving. She’ll have new goals and aspirations. My level of involvement with Emily will change as she gains more independence. It is not in my nature to remain in the same place either. So wherever Emily is – I will be somewhere else from today too.

One of the benefits of writing is it allows the author to reflect on where they have been. I write and document the present and although I don’t know the future I do know I will not be writing repeats.

  • Anything is possible if you at least try

  • Positive company matters most
  • Slow and steady will finish
  • Do it for fun
  • Do what you can – except give up

For Emily and me today is about getting coffee and walking the dog but tomorrow the next adventure awaits because anything is possible …
