Raise tables and awareness

Emily and I were at a restaurant recently where the table-top was too low, it didn’t allow Emily’s powered wheelchair to get underneath. Four blocks of wood can solve this problem immediately, lifting the table up and making it accessible in an easy fix ….so let’s raise tables and awareness.

I know how easy it is to fix low table tops as at a dinner function recently our waiter asked us to wait while he fetched four pieces of wood.  He and his colleagues lifted the table on to the wooden blocks raising the table by 3 or 4 inches allowing Emily to comfortably address her place setting. Why don’t all restaurants invest in four blocks of wood for these occasions, such an easy fix.

There are table raisers that can be bought from shops – the shops that supply independent living gadgets. Emily has these raisers under our dinning room table at home. They raise the table top and allow her to slip underneath very comfortably so she sits straight in-front of her table setting and food.

I have thought about taking four of the table raisers with us when we go out to eat but I am aggrieved to do so as bulky to carry when we are trying to have a relaxed outing.

I can also appreciate that restaurants may not be aware of these wonderful gadgets that rectify wheelchair access issues immediately so I thought I’d blog and let’s get sharing to raise tables and awareness!

Access is imperative for differently-abled people and especially wheelchair users, if restaurants are disinclined to invest in the table raisers shown then four blocks of wood are sufficient so there is every hope restaurants will comply when made aware. Let’s raise tables and awareness together.
