What happened next astonished me!

I met my cycling group this weekend which included a member returning from an injury. She complimented us all on our robust good health. What happened next astonished me!

As we cycled along our route, side by side, I thanked her for her compliment although I admitted feeling over-weight. This is when she astonished me as her reply was so honest.

She said if I’d put on weight then to remember that every delicious calorie was probably consumed in the company of great friends and loving family, savour the tasty memories of those moments as a life well lived!

WOW! She hadn’t opted for the “you look fine” or “don’t worry about it” reply, she genuinely astonished me!

I reflected on my ample hips and admitted to myself that I had enjoyed a few cocktails and scrumptious desserts recently. I had indulged with family and friends and slacked at my scheduled exercise routine. Following my friend’s truthfulness I acknowledge that every calorie was delicious, her simple candor prodded me towards renewed self awareness!

As we rode further our conversation straddled many wide ranging topics and I was reminded why good honest company is so important.  Our chattiness maybe random in it’s subject matter and unstructured but we address all manner of household problems, workplace issues, family, politics, sport and health concerns. Our chatter involves us in animated debate, imaginative ideology, practical suggestions for assorted meat-and-potato decisions and broad resolutions for far reaching worldly affairs. All in all our scheduled weekly rides are a framework for exercise but also a setting for a positive psyche overhaul.

We arrived into Blackwattle Bay to this view, having talked extensively while we rode (mainly debating the route) we relaxed into the moment. We arrived into The Tramsheds at Harold Park at our agreed rendezvous. Bikes and cars parked, we gathered into Garçon as the recommended coffee venue.

Our dialogue continued over our extra hot milky coffees and carried on as we investigated the varied restaurants. Certainly a place to visit for fun with some wonderful gourmet shopping opportunities (all accessible). I was mesmerised by the freshly made drying pasta let alone the thought of eating it!!

I returned home energised as my buddies had delivered plucky banter in spades. My friends had ‘fed’ me, not in the sense of calories but by underpinning, reinforcing and developing my thinking. Friendships are marvellous at extending horizons and broadening perspectives as conversations are unambiguous, straightforward and direct – replenishing my inner being.

As a carer I prioritise self-care activities to maintain my best self within the demands of the role. It is surprising how uplifting a good conversation can be; physically and mentally. I am invigorated by good honest company as relationships exhibit integrity and loyalty allowing supportive camaraderie to develop which is truly enduring.

I am not advocating that everyone should cycle – I am suggesting we should all make time for good friends. Stealing a brand phrase – because they’re worth it!
